Background will highlight, obscure, frame, add depth or even transcribe.
It’s role, as a creator of photographic meaning, though almost imperceptible, it fills the field and is more important than we think. It is safe to say that the exhibition's images are linked by an examination of this element of composition. And something else, provided by the other contextual meaning of the keyword; background as a base, a starting point, a support: a metaphor for a teacher that provides the backbone of university education.
